Charles Dieme has a background in the management of Sahelian freshwater ecosystems. He has graduated in Geography and Environmental Sciences respectively from Cheikh Anta Diop University (Senegal) and Wageningen University (The Netherlands), with a specialisation in nature resource management. After obtaining his Bachelor in Environment in 1996 from the University of St-Louis, he worked for many years as junior researcher in a project of the Royal Tropical Institute at the Biological Station of Djoudj National Park in the Lower Senegal River basin where he was involved in projects related to the management of aquatic ecosystems and environmental policies in the Senegal River Delta.
He also has experience in stakeholder participation in the management of protected areas. He conducted several studies such as the socio-economic impact of aquatic weeds (reeds) on the daily life of fisherman families within the Senegal River Delta and the monitoring of temporary freshwater ponds which provide water to isolated villages. After his graduation in 2002, he worked as consultant for amongst others the Senegal River Valley Authority (OMVS), IUCN-Senegal, Wetlands International headquarter offices, and the Ministry of Environment and Nature Conservation of Senegal. Since August 2007, he works at the Secretariat of GWA taking care of the activities in Francophone Central and West Africa.
