Joep Verhagen is working as a programme officer for IRC since May 2005. Amongst others, he is coordinating gender-related activities within IRC and member of IRC’s South Asia team. Furthermore, Joep is working on a range of topics related to community managed water supply, sanitation and hygiene in both urban and rural areas. The focus of his professional activities is on changing the way sector stakeholders work to achieve a more equitable and sustainable access to WASH services. Amongst others, he worked with BRAC, UNICEF, NEWAH, WaterAid, NGO Forum, etc

Prior to his present job, Joep has worked and lived for a period of almost 10 year in India. Working as an independent consultant he developed long-term partnerships with leading Indian NGOs such as Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and the Disaster Mitigation Institute (DMI). Furthermore, he has worked on short-term assignments for, amongst others, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, IRC, and Royal Netherlands Embassy. His main areas of expertise are : institutional development, community-based WASH services, gender and water, and community-based disaster mitigation.
