A report on the Accra conference on Water and Sustainable Development in Africa by Pauline Ikumi who represented GWA at this event.
The conference was held against a background of a number of international initiatives in the water sector. These include the adoption of the Dublin and Rio principles in 1992 and adoption of the African water Vision for 2025 during the Second World Water Forum in the Hague, Netherlands in 2000.
On 3-4 December 2007 the first Asia Pacific Water Forum took place in Beppu, Japan. Sara Ahmed, Chair of the Gender and Water Alliance was invited to attend the forum and was interviewed by the magazine "Terra Viva" about women participation in water management issues. Click here to read the interview.
On the second day of the forum Sara Ahmed participated in a the panel discussion " Increasing Capacity for Local Actions". In this discussion Sara Ahmed outlined the GWA’s mandate and the challenges faced, that range from, monitoring impacts of our ToTs, looking at gender mainstreaming as an empowering process (and not simply ‘a toolkit approach’) and assessing the quality of participation of poor women and men in community-level water management.
