Strengthening of Network

GWA's greatest strength is its membership. Throughout the 5-year programme (2006-2010) GWA will continue to work on the strengthening the network and improving the effectiveness of its operation. Here the activities to achieve this output of the strategical plan are described.


ArticleGWA attends Cap-Net managers meeting 2007

Esther de Jong, Programme Officer of GWA, attended the Cap-Net managers meeting which took place in Paraty, Brazil, from 3-7 December 2007. She presented the strategic plan 2006-2010 of GWA and focussed on possibilities for cooperation between both networks. Many useful contacts have been made and reinforced between GWA and the regional Cap-Net organisations.

FileReport of Seminar on Water and Micro-finance: Exploring Innovative Partnerships, October 2007

On the occasion of the state visit by the Dutch royalty, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, New Delhi, India, organized a high profile seminar on 25 October 2007, to discuss how micro-finance could help accelerate water (for both domestic and livelihood purposes) and sanitation goals, particularly those stated in the MDGs, through innovative partnerships. The seminar was attended by Her Majesty, Queen Beatrix, His Royal Highness, the Prince of Orange (Chair, UN Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation) and Her Royal Highness Princess Maxima (Member UN Advisory Board on Inclusive Financial Sectors). Participants in the seminar included representatives from the micro-finance and water sectors in India and the Netherlands, from industry (banking), civil society, academia and government.

Dr. Sara Ahmed, GWA Chair, attended this workshop and wrote the attached report.

ArticleGWA/AIT Regional Workshop: Strategic Planning for Mainstreaming Gender in IWRM in Southeast Asia and the Pacific

From 18-21 July 2007 a GWA/AIT Regional Workshop on Strategic Planning for Mainstreaming Gender in IWRM was held for Southeast Asia and the Pacific at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. The workshop was organized by the Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) and was co-hosted by AIT’s Gender and Development Studies Programme. A total of 33 participants and 20 graduate students and staff participated in the workshop.

The first day was spent on getting the general picture on gender mainstreaming in IWRM in the region and presenting the different networks and stakeholders.

The next days were used for group work to discuss existing best practices and to plan and coordinate regional activities around:

A. Capacity building

B. Knowledge development and dissemination

C. Policy and advocacy

The working groups met during two sessions and developed some priority activities and designated coordinators to get them moving, leading to a draft strategic plan for the region. The last day a field visit took place to Bang Pha Rok Community, where an environmental project was visited.

ArticleGWA South Asia Regional Workshop: Strategic Planning for Mainstreaming Gender in IWRM

The first Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) South Asia Regional Workshop, which was held from 23 to 25 January 2007 in Kathmandu, Nepal, had about 50 participants. They were both women and men, from NGOs, water networks, donor organizations and academia in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka as well as representatives from Water Aid, U.K. and the GWA Secretariat, the Netherlands. The Workshop was co-hosted by the Nepal Water for Health Foundation (NEWAH), one of the largest NGOs in Nepal working on water, health and sanitation from a gender and poverty perspective.

The main objective of the two day meeting was to build a collective vision and Action Plan for strategizing gender mainstreaming in integrated water resource management (IWRM) in the region. As a result the joint Action Plan for the South Asia region is in the process of being developped and the following activities have been jointly agreed upon.

  • A Gender Equity Gauge for monitoring water policies, sector reforms and the process of decentralization
  • Knowledge Management on gender and IWRM issues
  • Capacity Building on gender and IWRM, evolving a strategy and indicators
  • Urban Water and Sanitation Governance

FileFirst General Assembly

During the 4th World water Forum the first General Assembly of GWA took place. It was attended by allmost all members of GWA that were present in Mexico and by 14 other interested parties. The chairlady gave an opening address and the strategic plan was discussed. The minutes including opening address can be downloaded here:
